June. The branch was represented by 14 members and ladies. Once again Bert
Martin paraded our standard and many thanks to him for doing so, it is
very much appreciated. The event took place during the family open day which
was held by 22 and 26 Engineer Regiments. Many events took place including the
RE Band and the afternoon ended with a very nice 3 course meal in the Sgts
Mess.
SAPPER 300
This year we are celebrating 300
years of the Corps of Royal Engineers.
On the 26th May 1716 the Board of
Ordnance which up to that point comprised both Engineers and Artillerymen was
split with the Artillery and Engineers being placed on separate
establishments,so was born the Corps we know today. A royal warrant dated 25th
April 1787 granted ROYAL status leading to the current Corps of Royal
Engineers. Over the year the Corps has split up and helped form new regiments
and units including the Royal Air force, the Royal Army Service Corps, the Royal
Corps of Signals and the Royal Mechanical and Electrical Engineers.
The Corps of Royal Engineers has a very proud
history that has seen Sappers take part in every major campaign and action
fought by the British Army over the last 300 years. This continues to this day
and sees the Corps at the forefront of operational deployments enabling and
supporting all elements of the UKs Armed Forces.
300 Years Of The Engineers
In countless conflicts far and
wide we've battled on,we've bled and died
Our wives have mourned,our
children cried, 300 years of the Engineers
Throughout the years we've forged
our name,we are shy when praised
We shun the fame, One things for
sure.We know the game. 300 years of the Engineers
First in, last out is what we say
We've cleared the mines, we've
saved the day
To get things done, the Sapper
way. 300 years of the Engineers
How can we cross this river here,
there is no ford, no bridge we fear
I know ! We'll ask an Engineer.
300 years of the Engineers
Its time to build a bridge again,
in wind, in snow, in mud and rain
Forget the weather,bear the
pain.300 years of the Engineers
We've lost our mates along the
way, we will remember them we say
Remembrance Day is EVERY Day.300
years of the Engineers.
